Oliver Twist is one of Charles Dickens's best-loved novels. Raised in a workhouse for poor, homeless children, Oliver runs away to London. He falls in with a criminal gang there but then, by good fortune, is taken in by a kind and rich gentleman. The story moves between two sides of English life in the 1830s - an underworld of poverty and crime, and the comfortable, secure world of the upper classes. Oliver learns that love and kindness can be found in both these worlds.
